Leaving home to find safety

Most of our participants had to leave their homes in a rush and some barely escaped the bullets. Many had to flee with only a small backpack. But escape does not mean you are not affected by the war anymore.

One participant said: “When people ask ‘is your family safe?’ and you say ‘yes’, they think that’s it, there is no problem”.

Another said: “There were days when we understood that we didn’t know whether we would see anyone again… you had not even had time to say goodbye”.

Some participants came from the territories that were occupied by Russia back in 2014 and would like to remind us all that the war has been ongoing for almost a decade, with millions of lives and livelihoods affected, and the experience of pain and loss continues to grow with the war still raging at the time of this project.
